I met you standing still
with room enough to dance
I tried to hold a job down
to stay your shakin’ hands
The years came and went
like thunder in the cove,
a south cumberland wind
over highway sixty-four
You laughed cause you’re fragile
You laughed to get mad
Far from our storm-crossed hills,
strip towns and American drab
In the still of a cloudless night,
no one is waitin’ on the dawn;
but the dampness in its daybreak
will soak you to the bone
You left to find patience
You left on your own
You left like the wind carves sand
outcrops and turns all to stone
I feel it all I do
I want you through and through
so I hit the road for you
It ain’t small our world
It ain’t small our world
It ain’t small our world
It ain’t small our world
You laughed cause you’re fragile
You laughed to get mad
Far from our storm-crossed hills,
strip towns and American drab
You left to find patience
You left on your own
You left like the wind carves sand
outcrops and turns all to stone
You laughed cause you’re fragile
You laughed to get mad
Far from our storm-crossed hills,
strip towns and American drab

Castle and Moat
04:27
|
|
||
You woke me like a record player
on a dusty shelf tucked away
Then you spilled all your hopes and fears
on a mundane and bright Saturday
I’ll be the one to make whole again
the glass you let slip from your hold
I’ll be the one to tell all your friends
we met before we knew how to love
With time on the run,
a flightless fool’s song
will conquer and storm
your castle and moat
You teased out the best in me;
of that I’ll always be sure
You, you danced your own symphony
to the pain in every dissonant note
I’ll be the one to make whole again
the glass you let slip from your hold
I’ll be the one to tell all your friends;
we met, then we learned how to love
With time on the run,
a flightless fool’s song
will conquer and storm
your castle and moat
Decisions and turns
pushed us to the brink
I begged you to stay
cause I was just moving in
We're far past our prime;
at least that's what they'll spin
When my arms became tired,
you pulled me back in

Just Like Me
04:31
|
|
||
I stole my smile from an alabaster statue
when he smiled back at you
with lips curled like mine
There was a time; you clung to me gently
when the rain in the valley
cloaked the amber-lit, western skyline
The saints of old
like lovers past
and pious nonbelievers,
they're just like me, hallelujah
I still see you glide through the water
and cut all the switchbacks
to the tune of a million white lies
When I try to put it all down dear
the ink bleeds right through clear
to the back of the newsprint pile
The saints of old
like lovers past
and pious nonbelievers,
they're just like me, hallelujah
The virgin forest
ravaged last
the tides that rise to meet you,
they're just like me, hallelujah

Hold me, hold me in your weary arms,
and I will praise you for today
Tell me of my charms not of my flaws,
and I will praise you for today
Bring your fear, the one you say is always near
Let’s face it for today
And your trust, you know the one you said you lost
Let’s find it for today
Out on the water
like a stone you cast
only two skips from going under
All of me burns to stay,
but I know I can’t
Oh I know I can’t
So hold me, hold me in your weary arms,
and I will praise you for today
Tell me of my charms not of my flaws,
and I will praise you for today
Hold me, hold me in your weary arms,
and I will praise you for today
and I will praise you for today
and I will praise you for today
and I will praise you for today
